PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP

WORKSHOP:  THE CHALLENGE OF HIGH FAILURE RATES IN GATEWAY COLLEGE COURSES:  WE CAN AND MUST DO BETTER. . .HERE'S HOW

Description: This pre-conference workshop will bring two higher education thought leaders who are leading a national campaign to improve the currently abysmal performance in gateway courses. For purposes of the movement, gateway courses are defined as developmental and/or college credit-bearing courses with high enrollment within or across sections and unacceptably high rates of D, F, W (for withdrawal) and I (for incomplete) grades (DFWI rates). These courses serve as gateways to all “guided pathways,” general education “cores,” and majors – areas of study in which colleges and universities across the nation, especially community and state colleges, are realizing deplorable DWFI rates. Contrary to the tenets of social Darwinism, it doesn’t’ have to be this way. This workshop is designed for college faculty who teach gateway courses and who would like to improve student learning and outcomes therein, for their department chairs, deans and chief academic officers. The presenters will explore the many facets of this challenge, how these courses correlate with attrition, and lack of social justice and equity, and most importantly, what can be done to improve these outcomes. This event will be didactic and interactive, motivational, inspirational, informational, and surely provocative!
