AFC's 2019 Conference on College Teaching and Learning:
The Stars Will Be Shining
April 3 - 5, 2019
St. Petersburg, FL

Dr. Larry Tyree, Opening Plenary Keynote - Wednesday, April 3rd

Tyree’s lifelong commitment to education is clear from his impressive 45-year career in which he retired as president of Florida Keys Community College in Key West, Florida in June 2012. Previously, he held the rank of full professor at the University of Florida, where he was also the director of the Institute of Higher Education and the Executive Director of the National Alliance of Community and Technical Colleges. As an administrator, Dr. Larry Tyree worked at 11 community colleges in six states. For 32 years he was president or chancellor of three colleges in Florida (Gulf Coast, Santa Fe, and Florida Keys), as well as the Dallas County (Texas) Community College District. He also served as interim president of colleges in Kentucky, Kansas, New York, and Illinois.

Dr. Sandy Shugart, Luncheon Keynote - Thursday, April 4th
Dr. Sanford C. “Sandy” Shugart has served since 2000 as the fourth president of Valencia College in greater Orlando, Florida.  As winner of the first Aspen Prize for Excellence in 2011, Valencia is one of the most celebrated community colleges in America.  Dr. Shugart blends two careers, one as a college president, another as a poet and singer/songwriter. He says they nourish each other, his “day job” giving him the material that is turned into ballads and folk-rock lyrics of life, work, growing, and growing old.

Dr. Tonjua Williams, Awards Luncheon Keynote - Friday, April 5th
Tonjua Williams, Ph.D., became St. Petersburg College's seventh president on July 3, 2017. A St. Petersburg native, Dr. Williams began her tenure with the college in 1986, rising through the ranks in a variety of academic and administrative roles. In 2016, Dr. Williams was awarded the prestigious Aspen Presidential Fellowship for Community College Excellence, making her part of the inaugural class of the Aspen Presidential Fellows. She is a graduate of Leadership Tampa Bay, Leadership St. Pete, the Chancellor's Leadership Program and the Executive Leadership Program at the University of Florida.

The 2019 Legislative Session Starts in 20 Days: The AFC Keeps You Informed

Only twenty days until the start of the 2019 Legislative Session! Since advocacy on behalf of the AFC membership is one of the primary activities of the Association, the AFC offers a number of ways for members to stay informed and keep engaged. These include face-to-face professional development, web-based resources and weekly updates during legislative session.

The AFC's Legislative Days, an annual face-to-face event held in Tallahassee, took place last week. On day one, the attendees learned about the AFC advocacy process, how a bill becomes law, reviewed legislative issues and talking points and got some tips on how to utilize social media for advocacy efforts. On day two attendees took to the hill and made visits to their legislators and attended relevant committee meetings.

In addition to the AFC Legislative Days, there are online advocacy resources available 24/7 to keep you up to date on legislative issues impacting the Florida College System.  You can visit the AFC Advocacy Tookit HERE for general information as well as useful links. This page is also where we post, when needed, Advocacy Alerts, with links to relevant information and calls to action.

For information about the official AFC/FCS 2019 legislative priorities and the FCS funding "ask", as developed by the AFC Council of Presidents (COP), click HERE to visit the FundFLColleges page. This page is also easily accessible from the 2019 Legislative Session button that is embedded in the AFC website masthead on every AFC webpage throughout the AFC website.

Once legislative session begins, the AFC begins publishing weekly Capital Perceptions and electronically delivering it to all members. Capitol Perceptions provides updates on current legislative issues and their progress throughout the session. The most recent issue (to start in March 2019) and back issues of Capitol Perceptions are posted HERE.
