Navigating Change With Emotional Intelligence

Change is inevitable in higher education, and lately, that’s been accelerated as we deal with events like the pandemic and its aftermath, shifts in learner demographics, and other shake-ups in academia. Emotional intelligence (EI) provides valuable tools to navigate the changing landscape for yourself and your work team. You may already be familiar with EI’s main components—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management—but how well do you use them when confronted with the challenges associated with change? This presentation will give you a chance to assess your current EI level. Then you’ll learn practical EI skills through a combination of lecture, examples, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Be ready to participate! You’ll leave with solid new strategies in your change management toolkit.

Learning Objectives:

At this session you will:

  • Discuss the value of being emotionally intelligent
  • Analyze the four dimensions of Emotional Intelligence
  • Examine the role of emotional intelligence in the change process
  • Observe how emotional behaviors impact the workplace during times of change
  • Practice strategies to handle change effectively using emotional intelligence

 Your presenters:

Dr. Jeff Czarnec

Dr. Czarnec is the Associate Dean of Social Sciences overseeing SNHU’s undergraduate Criminal Justice program. His past experience in law enforcement and current work with curriculum and faculty gives him a practical knowledge of how emotional intelligence applies in real-world situations. Dr. Czarnec leads lively discussions in the chat through the presentation.

Dr. Hector Garcia

Dr. Garcia is the Associate Dean of Social Sciences overseeing SNHU’s graduate Criminal Justice program. Like Dr. Czarnec, he brings a rich array of experience in both law enforcement and academia to the table. His engaging presentation style and sense of humor will make you laugh as you learn.

Seth Matthews

Seth is the Associate Dean of Social Sciences overseeing SNHU’s Human Services program. In addition to his work at SNHU, Seth is experienced with hands-on work in the Human Services field. Using EI skills while dealing with clients is critical, and Seth shares his knowledge with engaging anecdotes and demonstrations.

Dr. Barb Lesniak

Dr. Lesniak is the Senior Associate Dean of Social Sciences. Although she oversees all of the Social Sciences disciplines, her background is in Psychology. She oversaw the recent redevelopment of SNHU’s BA.PSY program, where EI is an embedded theme in every core class. She will make direct connections between EI skills and the change process.
